Ready, Set, Go!

Besides races of all kinds, there are two times of year where this phrase best describes the season of our lives, the beginning of a New Year and the beginning of a school year.

Ready, Set, Go!

Ready, set, go is an abbreviated form of a phrase first used in the 1800s to begin foot faces at a county fair, “On your mark, get set, go!”

“On your mark” referred to the place on the course where the runner would start the race, whether a line or a starting block. “Get set” was a warning that the signal to start running was about to occur. Today when a runner “gets set” they usually go into a crouch position, raise their hips and tense their legs in preparation to explode into a fast start when they hear the command “go!”

All parents, teachers and students know all that is involved to get “Ready” and “Set” for a new school year. Sometimes you are exhausted and worn out before “Go” is ever sounded!

Life often seems like a race from school year to school year. Even though our children are grown and married, Dallas and I feel like August marks the beginning of another race. There is something exciting about the beginning of school, Friday Night Lights, the approach of Fall and the forthcoming parade of seasonal holidays that have children counting off the days, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.

Back to school means racing again towards visions and dreams. Back to school means resuming the discipline of structured times for eating, homework, going to and rising up from a goodnights sleep. Back to school means getting back to a healthy rhythm of preparation, planning, working, studying, family time, playing and worship.

We, your church staff, have been praying for families, teachers and students as you get “ready” for the coming school year. As you have been getting everything “set” and in order, we have been brainstorming ways to enhance your preparation to get off to a good start when “go” is sounded. We want to join you in this race, the entire school year, encouraging, equipping and empowering you to run strong and steady until the finish line is crossed next May.

As we wrap up our study of 2 Timothy and begin the 2018-2019 school year, we have some Weekend Worship Surprises to help your Ready, Set, Go be a little more successful and fun. Spread the word and don’t miss out! Invite a friend, a teacher, a new family on the block to join you in worship as we begin a four weekend push to help you get ready for an exciting, action packed, successful school year.

I am praying for you. Please pray for me.
